    SASgov Events & Announcements

SASgov strives to improve the living, learning, and working experience of graduate students in the School of Arts and Sciences and in the College of Liberal and Professional Studies.  For more information, please visit www.sasgov.org

    1. SASgov / Dean’s Grant for Research and New Media

The Student Government of the School of Arts and Sciences, in conjunction with the Office of the Dean, announces a new award to support graduate research during the summer of 2011. We know that Penn graduate students are engaged in remarkable and noteworthy research and seek to foster new ways of making the public and graduate student communities at large aware of this work.

PURPOSE: To support innovative and vibrant research projects in departments throughout the School of Arts and Sciences. Grantees will pursue a well-defined course of research or creative work and document it using a variety of new media: photography, video, blogging, twitter, etc. In Fall 2011 they will participate in a colloquium where they will present their research in a 30-minute talk which will be open to the public.

These guidelines are deliberately broad; successful projects can take any number of forms, but should both contribute to the applicant’s research at Penn and be germane to discussion in the public-lecture format. While successful projects may include work relating directly to a student’s primary research interest or dissertation topic, we also welcome proposals for supplementary or non-traditional forms of research.

AWARD: Students in good standing may propose grants in amounts up to $4,000. All funding should be applied directly to costs of research: travel expenses, materials, etc. This may include any photo or video equipment necessary to fulfill the new media / documentation component of the requirements. A proposed budget should account for all requested funds, as well as any in-kind contributions to the project and/or additional sources of funding you may be requesting.

The grant should not be used for cost-of-living in Philadelphia. SASgov wishes to encourage research complementary to, but otherwise beyond the scope of normal graduate work. The award is open to students with or without summer funding packages through their departments.

APPLICATION: By April 15, 2011, submit the following materials (PDF only) to sasgov- president@sas.upenn.edu:

    1. A letter of interest detailing the proposed research project.
    2. Project budget. Include (be as specific as possible) projected expenses as well as any in-kind contributions. Should account for entirety of requested funds.
    3. Name and e-mail address of one faculty reference. Following an initial review of projects, finalists will be asked to supply one letter of recommendation.
    4. A curriculum vitae or brief biographical paragraph demonstrating a history of successful self-directed research or creative work and the public presentation thereof.

    2. Career Services, SASgov, the Graduate Student Center, GAPSA and the Women’s Center are pleased to present…

    Valerie Young, Ed.D.

How to Feel As Bright and Capable As Everyone Seems to Think You Are: What Every Woman and Man Needs to Know About Competence, the Impostor Syndrome, and the Art of Winging It

    Tuesday, April 12, 4:00– 6:15 pm

Chemistry Building (34th and Spruce), Room 102

    ·         Dr. Valerie Young is an internationally-known workshop leader and public speaker who specializes in helping women and men reach their full potential.  A self-described "recovering impostor," she earned her doctoral degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst where her research focused on understanding and eliminating the psychological barriers preventing women from embracing their full potential.

    ·         She has presented on the Impostor Syndrome and other topics to students, alumni, faculty, and staff at numerous colleges and universities including Harvard, Johns Hopkins, MIT, California Institute of Technology and Michigan State University as well to such diverse organizations as Intel, Boeing, Procter & Gamble, IMB, Ernst & Young, Chrysler, Society of Women Engineers, and American Women in Radio and Television.

    ·         The Impostor Syndrome is the persistent feeling experienced by many high achievers that they aren’t as smart and capable as their credentials would suggest.  Research has shown that many academics suffer from gnawing feelings of inadequacy.  Smart, talented students and postdocs – and women especially -- often reveal that they believe they are frauds, that it is a mistake or a matter of luck that they have succeeded, and that they are sure someone will find out the truth – that they just aren’t as smart as their record shows.

The format is lecture/discussion, 4-5:30.  Those interested can stay for the last half hour for an interactive workshop.

Refreshments will be served in the lobby (no food in the classroom) prior to the start of the event.

Registration is required.  CLICK HERE to register

Co-sponsored by Career Services, SASgov, the Graduate Student Center, GAPSA and the Women’s Center
