b. Call for Papers: Penn Humanities Forum Graduate Conference “Missed Connections”
The Graduate Humanities Forum of the University of Pennsylvania invites submissions for its 10th annual conference: “Missed Connections.” The one-day interdisciplinary conference will take place on Friday, February 19th, 2010 at the Penn Humanities Forum in conjunction with its 2009-2010 topic: “Connections.” Our keynote speaker is Laura Otis, a leading 19th-century literature and science scholar and recipient of a MacArthur fellowship at Emory University.
What might it mean to consider the ways in which connections are foreclosed, desires for union left unsatisfied, communications disrupted? A “missed connection” might be as intimate as a brush with a stranger or as literal as a dropped phone call or departing plane; it might be a forgotten or neglected history or genealogy. “Missed Connections” seeks to foreground failures or absences of connection across disciplines and methodologies. We hope for briefs against perfect transmission, network theory attuned to the gaps in coverage. We are also interested in fields of study that might come into focus for being “unconnected”: the rural, the isolated (geographically and historically), the illegible, the strange/estranged.
This conference is open to all graduate students, at Penn and beyond, so if you know of someone at another institution who would be interested, please spread the word!
More information on the conference is available at our website: http://www.phf.upenn.edu/09-10/ghf/cfp.shtml
To apply, please send 250-word paper proposals for one of the panels (described on the website) along with a 1-page CV via email to Rachael Nichols at nichols.rachael@gmail.com by Nov 1, 2009. (Notification by Dec 1, 2009.)
c. Call for Papers: Penn Politics & History Graduate Workshop. 2009-2010 Theme: Changing Narratives of Liberty
The Penn Politics & History Graduate Workshop is calling for proposals for the fall 2009 semester. This call is open to all graduate students at Penn and in the Philadelphia area.
We are interested in bringing together graduate students from a variety of disciplinary and methodological backgrounds to present and discuss working papers related to this year’s theme: Changing Narratives of Liberty. Paper topics could include questions of citizenship, liberation movements, religious toleration, political discourses, and surveillance, among others. We encourage students in any department or stage of research to apply.
Participants will be asked to present an unpublished paper for discussion at the monthly workshop. An interdisciplinary group of graduate participants will provide constructive feedback and discussion about the submitted papers. The workshop is intended to
function as an informal and collaborative setting for students whose work crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries.
If you are interested in presenting a paper, please send a tentative title and a short abstract (200 to 300 words) no later than September 15th to coordinate@gsc.upenn.edu. Please email us if you would like to be added to our emailing list or have any questions about the Politics & History graduate workshop.
d. Call for papers: Graduate Workshop of the Penn Interdisciplinary Program for Democracy,Citizenship and Constitutionalism
The Graduate Workshop of the Penn Interdisciplinary Program for Democracy, Citizenship and Constitutionalism is now calling for proposals for papers to present in the fall 2009 semester. This call is open to all graduate students at Penn and in the Philadelphia area. We are interested in bringing into dialogue a variety of scholars, approaches and themes, especially as related to this year’s topic of Sovereignty, Territoriality, and Plural Citizenships. Paper topics might include questions of identity, colonial discourses, diplomacy, nationalisms, postcolonial state formation, gender and citizenship, contests over and within national and territorial boundaries, and liberation movements. If you are interested in presenting a paper, please send a provisional title and a short abstract (200 to 300 words) no later than August 17th to PennDCC@gmail.com.
You can find the abstracts and papers from previous workshops on the DCCGraduate Workshop website: http://www.sas.upenn.edu/dcc/workshops/graduate.html
