About Us
SASgov strives to improve the living, learning, and working experience of graduate students in the School of Arts and Sciences. We foster a vibrant graduate community by planning social activities to bring students together from diverse graduate groups, by coordinating programs to further the academic and career goals of our constituents, and by advocating for the interests of graduate students before the SAS administration.
We aim to work closely with our constituents, as well as with other student governments on issues of shared interest.
Our Motto
The SASgov motto “Docemus et Discimus” (”We teach and we learn“) summarizes the interrelated activities to which SAS graduate students devote themselves.
Our Logo
The SASgov arms are red (gules), blue (azure) and white (argent), following the color scheme used in the Shield of the University of Pennsylvania. The heraldic description of the SASgov shield: “In the chief an embattled line, with three chess rooks; in the ground a falcon close.”
The embattled line was chosen for the SASgov shield as representative of the often frustrating obstacles which we hope to overcome on the way to the completion of our degrees. The three chess rooks simultaneously embody three sets of SAS ideals. They represent the protection, strength and strategic planning that SASgov hopes to provide to SAS graduate students. They furthermore represent the three major areas of study in the School of Arts and Sciences (Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities) and the three types of degrees offered by the School (PhD, Research Masters, and Professional Masters). The falcon close denotes an eager individual hot in pursuit of a much desired object, someone who will not rest until the objective is achieved.
